"Teenage years seem to come along sooner than we expect them to and the issues our children work through during that time don’t go away - they are real. Research shows that adopted teens do not have any more nor less adjustment or "teen problems" as puberty strikes than their non-adopted classmates. This is good news for anxious parents wondering what the teen years could bring for their adopted child. Still, what that research shows it that some teens will face issues while others will not.
Active parenting makes a huge difference. Just as your child becomes more and more independent and you feel like you can take a step back and say "ahhh", it’s really not so simple. Middle school kids go through a wide variety of physical, intellectual and psychosocial development during these years. Young adolescents need a lot of parental support during this metamorphasis. So do parents! The following is a sampling of books you may find helpful in getting your parenting skills ready for the teen years."
